Chatfield Junior Wrestling
FAQ's
Many questions may be answered by reading the parent guide, but some of the more common questions and answers are below.
Q: What equipment is needed?
A: T-shirt and shorts (one set provided with registration) are typically worn in practices, a singlet (wrestling suit) is mandatory for tournaments. We will have new team singlets available to purchase for ~$36, but you may wear any singlet you choose. Headgear is mandatory for any full speed contact. Wrestling shoes are mandatory for competition and strongly recommended for practice. We have some sizes of used wrestling shoes available to purchase. There will be a representative from a local provider at one of our first practices with new equipment at a discount, or you may purchase your own from retail/re-sale stores such as Play It Again Sports, B&H Sports, Gart Sports, etc.
Q: When does wrestling season start and end?
A: First practice is early November, and the last tournament is the Colorado State Youth Wrestling Championships late January or early February. The first in-town tournaments are usually the 3rd week in November. Please see the Tournament page for more detail. National tournaments continue through March and April, and "Freestyle" wrestling continues through the summer. Our regular season is November through the end of February with the same break and Holidays as Jefferson County Schools.
Q: Where and when are practices?
A: Practices will be held in the wrestling room at Chatfield High School located at 7227 S. Simms Street. Practice will be every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday starting the first Monday in November. We will attempt to have an informal competition (called a "dual meet") with other programs as possible. We will provide more information about these nights as December approaches.
Q: Where and when are the tournaments and competitions?
A: The tournaments are usually held on Sundays, and will be at the location of the club that is sponsoring them. Most local High Schools have a youth program associated with them, so the tournaments will be at those schools. Weigh-ins will usually be the night before the tournament, and will be at the tournament location in most cases. Wrestling usually starts at 9:00 AM, so we recommend arrival around 8:15-8:30. Plan to stay until 3:00 or 4:00 PM for a winning wrestler in a common weight bracket (average size for age). We will warm-up as a team, and we will have a coach (or two) at matside to coach your match. Expect to wrestle every hour or two until you have lost 2 matches, or your bracket is finished (more on this at the Beginner Camp). We will try to have meets with one or two other programs throughout the season as we are able to schedule them. These will be mostly on Thursday evenings during our regular practice time. The coaches will referee the matches, and medals will not be awarded. (again, more on this at the Beginner Camp).
Q: What if I can't make it to every practice and tournament?
A: Wrestling is a mostly individual sport. We recommend making every practice because important information, conditioning and review takes place at every practice. The rest of the team is not reliant on your participation however, so amount of participation is purely a personal decision. The same answer applies to tournaments- few if any (including children of coaches) will participate in every tournament. Wrestling does pay back what you put into it over time. Wrestling champions at the higher levels are not necessarily the strongest or fastest, but typically the most determined.
Q: Weight loss? Injuries? Pro Wrestling? Aggression?
A: These topics are the negative stereotypes of wrestling, but are rarely of any concern in reality. In fact, wrestling is one of the best sports to get a healthy perspective on all of these issues. Please read the parent guide and/or discuss your concerns with any of the coaches from our staff.
