Chatfield Junior Wrestling

Stance, Neutral Position, Referee's Position

Stance - we learned a basic "square" stance.  Staggered stances are preferred by some.  In either, knees are bent and weight is towards the front of the feet not the heels.  Elbows are in with hands protecting legs.  Staggered is more aggressive, and as preferred for attack.

Shuffle (side to side, forward & back), change level, drop step, drive through (penetrate).

Neutral Position:

This is how all matches will begin.  This means that both wrestlers are standing and facing each other.  The wrestlers should be in a "good stance" and ready to wrestle.

These wrestlers are in a neutral position, but stances could be better.  Elbows in, etc.

Referee's position:

This is the position that a match will restart if one wrestler has gained control of another, and will most likely start the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd periods unless "neutral position" is chosen.

One wrestler is in the down position: on hands and knees with hands in front of the front line, knees behind the back line, head up, elbows slightly bent, sitting back onto ankles, feet with shoe laces flat on the mat.  Toes under, ready to explode is a more aggressive, but more limiting position.

The other wrestler will be in the "top" or "up" position: 1 knee down next to the knee of the down wrestler, same hand  as the down knee (e.g. left knee, left hand) circling the elbow (like a "C" right at the elbow joint with the center of the palm cupping the sharp part of the elbow)  on the same side as the down knee, other hand circles the waist of the down wrestler covering the belly button, head is flat against down wrestler's back looking away, or preferred is chin in the middle of opponent's back, pressing down.  Head at the side will likely earn a bloody nose!

These wrestlers are in the Referee's position.  Top wrestler's thumb should be around the arm, and his back foot should be closer.  Down wrestler has his toes under.

This is nearly perfect...Top wrestler's head could be flat against the back of the down wrestler.
